2023 was a whirlwind endeavor to get “Unschool Discoveries” published and start this community engagement. Alongside my kids, I have been unschooling myself, updating my skills in strategy frameworks for business, product AI, and digital communications, as well as adding new human and programming languages to my mental database. I’ve also made strides in my deschooling journey with the help of EMDR therapy, neuroscience techniques to build new neural pathways, and CBT to reframe old, untrue programming learned during my schoolishness years.

The year 2024 marks the beginning of a new chapter, especially for unschoolers, as we enter The Roaring 20's of Our Era!

I had, perhaps arbitrarily, given them the number 60 - a period long enough to teach patience and close enough to the holidays to tie in with the cultural magic of the season. Maybe, subconsciously, the number was influenced by my recent book release's financial considerations or the anticipation of holiday gifts. Regardless, the "60 days" became our shared journey.

Embracing Patience and Anticipation

Each day, Dino Robot inquired about the time remaining for their wish to materialize. I gently reminded them that the universe was working on it. To help them visualize the process, I suggested they mark off the days on a calendar (and also to sneak practice writing). However, like any child, his anticipation was palpable, and the concept of time was abstract.

“I’ve watched my kids learn, practice and exhibit great levels of patience and determination to complete tasks while playing video games. If parents are worried about their children getting jobs (not us we’re raising entrepreneurs) or being able to focus on tasks that need to be done, video games help build those skills with a reward feedback system far simpler than the cash needed to cover food, shelter and bills. If they can complete tasks for small rewards they can do it for the big things.”

Glad you asked,

Unschooling is a form of homeschooling that emphasizes self-directed learning, where education is driven by a child’s interests, curiosity, and natural desire to learn, rather than following a fixed curriculum or standardized tests. It is based on the belief that children are naturally curious and learn best when they are allowed to explore subjects that interest them at their own pace.

In unschooling, learning is not confined to a classroom or specific hours of the day; it happens all the time, in a variety of settings, and through everyday experiences. Parents act as facilitators, providing resources, support, and guidance, rather than traditional teachers. They help their children access information, explore their interests, and engage with the world around them.

Unschooling emphasizes the development of skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, and values the individual learning journey of each child. It is often associated with a more holistic approach to education, which considers the emotional, social, and physical development of the child, in addition to academic learning.
